The United Nations (UN) Day is observed annually on 24th October worldwide to commemorate the day when the UN Charter came into force in 1945.
- 24th October 2024 marks the 79th Anniversary of the founding of the UN.
- On 26th June 1945, the UN Charter was signed by representatives of 50 nations during the UN Conference on International Organization (UNCIO) in San Francisco, USA, and came into force on 24th October 1945.
- The UN was established upon ratification and notification by key nations, including China, France, the United Kingdom (UK), the Soviet Union, and the USA, along with the majority of other signatory states.
Main Points:- (i) On 31st October 1947, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/168(II), declaring 24th October as United Nations Day each year.
(ii) The name 'United Nations' was proposed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the USA.
