General Luong Cuong Elected as Vietnam's New President.

Appointment

On October 21, 2024, Vietnam’s National Assembly elected 67-year-old General Luong Cuong as the 14th President of Vietnam in a session held in Hanoi.


      - He succeeds To Lam, who served as the 13th President from May 2024 to October 2024. In August 2024, To Lam was appointed as the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party.

      - Luong Cuong began his military service in 1975 and rose through the ranks to become Major General in 2006. He also held the position of Chief of the General Department of Politics in the Vietnam People’s Army.

     

Main Points:-   (i) Since 2021, he has been an influential member of the Politburo (Communist Party of Vietnam).

      (ii) Luong Cuong has served as a Permanent Member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat since May 2024.
