"Dr. Jitendra Singh Releases ICMR-INDAIB Survey Data on Diabetes in Jammu".

On October 20, 2024, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), released data related to the 'ICMR-India Diabetes INDIAB' survey. This survey is the world's largest of its kind, aimed at assessing the prevalence of diabetes in India, including Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The event took place in Jammu, J&K.


      - The study was conducted by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Department of Health Research, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW).

      - The Jammu phase surveyed 1,520 participants from both urban and rural areas, providing valuable insights into the region's health landscape.

      - According to the survey, the overall prevalence of hypertension, general obesity, and abdominal obesity in Jammu was found to be 27.1%, 41.7%, and 62.7%, respectively.

Main Points:-   (i) The ICMR-INDIAB study indicates that 10.8% of the population in the Jammu region is affected by prediabetes, highlighting the urgent need for action against the rising burden of NCDs in the area.

      (ii) The overall disease burden in the Jammu region, covering its 10 districts, is 18.9%, with 26.5% in urban areas and 14.5% in rural areas—higher than the national average.

(iii) The Indian government plans to establish nearly 150,000 health and wellness centers across the country to prevent and control NCDs like diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancer.
