International Abhidhamma Day 2024 was celebrated by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) on October 17, 2024, at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.


      - International Abhidhamma Day is observed worldwide to honor the descent of Lord Buddha from Tavatimsa, the heavenly realm of thirty-three divine beings, to Sankassiya (now known as Sankisa Basantapur in Uttar Pradesh).

      - The celebration of Abhidhamma Day coincides with the end of the first Rainy Retreat (Vassa) and the Pavāraṇā festival. This is a time when monks and nuns conclude their retreat period with a special ceremony.

     

Main Points:-   (i) Pavāraṇā Day is celebrated on the full moon day of the 11th lunar month, which typically falls in October.

      (ii) The celebration will bring together around 1,000 participants, including ambassadors, monks, scholars, and young experts from 14 countries. Prime Minister Modi's address will emphasize the continued relevance of Abhidhamma teachings and efforts to preserve Pali as a classical language.
