India is making strides in the 6G race, ranking among the top six countries globally in patent filings.

According to various studies, India ranks among the top six countries in the world for filing patents related to 6G technology, highlighting India’s potential impact on the 6G standard-setting process.


      - This progress aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to position India as a key contributor in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.

      - The Government of India (GoI) is currently evaluating 470 proposals under the "Bharat 6G Vision" for "Accelerated Research on 6G Ecosystem." The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communication, has funded two next-generation testbeds to promote 6G research.

      - According to projections by the GoI-led panel, India can achieve a 10% share of all 6G patents and contribute 1/6th to international standards in the next three years.

Main Points:-   (i) According to official data from MaxVal, a global Intellectual Property (IP) management firm, India ranks 6th with 188 6G-related patents, based on data from the Government of India (GoI).

      (ii) China leads global patent filings with 6,001 6G-related patents, followed by the United States (USA) with 3,909 patents, South Korea with 1,417 patents, Japan with 584 patents, and the European Union (EU) with 214 patents.

(iii) The World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly (WTSA 2024) will be held in Delhi from October 14 to October 24, 2024, making India the first country in Asia to host this event.
