INS Samarthak, the first ship of L&T's Multi-Purpose Vessel, was launched in Chennai.

On October 14, 2024, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) launched the first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), Yard No. 18001, named Indian Naval Ship (INS) Samarthak. This ship is built for the Indian Navy (IN) and was launched from L&T's Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).


      - The launch was conducted by Shashi Tripathi, President of the Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), and attended by the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi.

     

     

Main Points:-   (i) The name 'Samarthak,' which means 'Supporter,' reflects the vessel's intended versatile operational roles.

      (ii) The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and L&T Shipbuilding Limited, based in Chennai (Tamil Nadu), signed a contract on March 25, 2022, for the construction of two Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs).

(iii) Another important function of the Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) is to serve as a trial platform for testing indigenous (homegrown) weapons and sensors that are currently under development.
