International Day of the Girl Child: Observed Globally on October 11 Every Year.

The United Nations' International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC) is observed globally every year on October 11. This day aims to address the challenges faced by girls and promote their empowerment and fulfillment of their human rights.


      - The first International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated on October 11, 2012. The UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/66/170 on December 19, 2011, declaring October 11 of each year as the International Day of the Girl Child.

      - Recently, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) released its first global and regional estimates on sexual violence against children.

     

Main Points:-   (i) The theme for the 2024 International Day of the Girl is "Girls' Vision for the Future."

      (ii) This report, published ahead of the International Day of the Girl, underscores the scale of these violations worldwide, particularly for adolescent girls, who often suffer lifelong consequences. According to the report, more than 370 million girls and women, or 1 in 8, have experienced rape or sexual assault before the age of 18.
