Indian Olympian gymnast Dipa Karmakar has announced her retirement.

On 7th October 2024, Dipa Karmakar, India’s first female gymnastics Olympian, announced her retirement from professional competition at the age of 31, after a remarkable 25-year career in the sport.


      - Dipa Karmakar won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Indian female gymnast to do so.

      - In 2021, Dipa won a gold medal at the Asian Gymnastics Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

     

Main Points:-   (i) Dipa represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she became the first Indian female gymnast to participate in the Olympics and finished 4th in vault.

      (ii) She also earned a bronze at the Asian Championships and finished 5th at the 2015 World Championships, both firsts for Indian athletes.

(iii) In 2018, she won a gold medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Türkiye, the first for any Indian gymnast at a global event, and also secured a bronze in Cottbus, Germany.
