Assam Becomes the First State to Introduce Co-Districts as a New Administrative Framework.

Assam has taken a pioneering step by becoming the first state in India to launch and operationalize Co-Districts, an innovative initiative aimed at decentralizing district administration and bringing governance closer to the grassroots. Co-Districts serve as targeted administrative units within a district.

  • - A total of 21 Co-Districts were launched across Assam, with the goal of making governance and administrative services more accessible to citizens.
  • - Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma initiated this administrative reform in 2023, replacing the previous system of 24 civil sub-divisions.

  • (i) The government plans to establish Co-District offices in all 126 assembly constituencies in Assam.
  • (ii) On October 4, 2024, Phase 1 of this initiative was launched, followed by the inauguration of 18 Co-Districts on October 5, 2024.
