European Space Agency (ESA) announces mission to study Apophis asteroid.

Science and Technology

The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced a mission to study the asteroid Apophis, which will pass very close to Earth in 2029.After NASA, ESA is the second major space agency to commit to a space mission for Apophis, which was once considered to be on a collision course with Earth. In 2029, Apophis will come within 32,000 km of Earth, providing space agencies with a rare opportunity to study the asteroid up close. ESA stated that an asteroid of this size comes this close to Earth only once every 5,000 to 10,000 years.

ESA's mission aims to deepen knowledge of asteroid structure and movements.

Apophis' close pass provides a rare opportunity for detailed scientific observation.
