The President of the European Council is elected by the heads of state or government of the EU member states for a term of 2.5 years, renewable once, making a maximum tenure of five years. This role involves chairing and representing the European Council, which sets the EU's overall political direction and priorities.


      Elected by EU leaders for 2.5 years, renewable once, max 5 years tenure.

      Antonio Costa replaces Belgium's Charles Michel and will take charge on October 1, 2024.
