According to data from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), from 2015-2019, a total of India's reported 30.51 million hectares of land was degraded. This means that by 2019, 9.45 percent of the country's land was destroyed. In 2015 it was 4.42 percent. According to UNCCD, India's total barren land is equivalent to the size of 43 million football pitches. The UNCCD data dashboard released on October 25, 2023, also revealed that 251.71 million Indians, which is 18.39 per cent of the country's population, were exposed to land degradation during the same period," UNCCD Chief Scientist Baron Joseph Orr said in a tweet. "Working together with India to accelerate and restore one billion hectares of healthy land by 2030."
