The President of India, Droupadi Murmu launched India’s first home-grown gene therapy named “CAR-T cell therapy” for cancer at IIT Bombay. India’s first CAR-T cell therapy is developed through collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Tata Memorial Hospital in association with industry partner ImmunoACT. A CAR T-cell therapy involves modifying a patient's T cells (a type of immune system cell) in the laboratory and using them to attack and destroy cancer cells. The NexCAR19 CAR-T therapy is developed by Prof Rahul Purwar, Department of Bio-sciences and Bio-engineering along with his team at IIT Bombay, at the startup ImmunoACT which he co-founded with his students, and with doctors at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai.

The 'NexCAR19 CAR T-cell therapy' is the country's first 'Made in India' CAR T-cell therapy which is expected to bring down the cost of treatment significantly.

CAR-T cell therapy is considered to be one of the most phenomenal advances in medical science.
