The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India have signed a $200 million loan agreement to upgrade 176 kilometers of state roads in the state of Jharkhand, opening new economic opportunities and improving access to services for the poor. Jharkhand State Roads II Project funds will be used to upgrade sections of four state roads to two-lane standard and support improvements in the design, safety and maintenance of the network. The first loan supported the upgrade of 311 kilometers (km) of state roads in Jharkhand and the new assistance will take the total to 487 km. The new project includes a number of safety and eco-friendly features including more than 60 bus stop shelters; 50 km of elevated footpaths in urban areas; 4 km dedicated cycle lane; and solar-powered streetlights. The project will also create employment opportunities for residents of nearby areas, including women, who will get a share of at least 20% of the jobs for afforestation work along the upgraded roads.
