World Stroke Day is observed every year on 29 October to emphasize the serious nature and high rates of stroke. This day is also celebrated to raise awareness about stroke prevention and treatment.

Worldwide, brain stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death. Every year approximately 18 lakh people suffer from stroke. The average incidence rate of stroke in India is 145 per one lakh (1,00,000) population. According to researchers, every minute three Indians suffer a stroke. This year, 2023, the theme of World Stroke Day is "Together We Are #GreaterThanStroke". It emphasizes prevention of risk factors such as high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, smoking, diet and exercise, as about 90% of strokes can be prevented by paying attention to risk factors. World Stroke Day was established on 29 October 2004 in Vancouver. , at the World Stroke Congress in Canada. Later in 2006 this day was announced for public awareness.
