Sweden formally joined NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) as the 32nd member of the transatlantic military alliance. The country first applied to join NATO in May 2022, not long after Russia’s war on Ukraine began. After over 200 years of non-alignment Sweden now enjoys the protection granted under Article 5, the ultimate guarantee of Allies’ freedom and security. Sweden’s accession makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer and the whole Alliance more secure.

Finland became an official member of NATO April 2023.
