The Union Cabinet has approved a crucial bill to providing reservations to Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the Goa Legislative Assembly. Union Minister Piyush Goyal, while briefing reporters on the Cabinet's decisions, announced the approval of the 'Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes Bill, 2024'. This bill will empower the Census Commissioner to ascertain and determine the population of STs in Goa. Based on this determination, the Election Commission will amend the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 2008, to facilitate ST reservation in the 40-member Goa Assembly. The bill's provisions include empowering the Census Commissioner to ascertain and determine the population of Scheduled Tribes in Goa, considering tribes declared as such after the publication of Census 2001.

The bill is now slated for introduction in the next Lok Sabha, which will be formed after the upcoming general elections.
