Almost everything was a first in the remarkable career of Justice M. Fatima Beevi, who died at the age of 96. With a determination to re-establish the role of women in the Indian judiciary, she became the first woman judge of the Supreme Court of India. Fathima Beevi was born in 1927 to Annaveettil Meeran Sahib and Khadija Beevi of Pathanamthitta. He completed his schooling from Catholic High School and earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from University College, Thiruvananthapuram. In accordance with her father's wish for her to become a lawyer, she pursued a law degree and was enrolled as an advocate in November 1950. She was the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2001 and her most controversial decision was administering the oath of office. And within hours of AIADMK winning majority in the assembly elections in May 2001, former Chief Minister Jayalalitha was granted secrecy. He was disqualified from contesting elections that year due to his conviction in two TANSI land deal cases.
