A high-level committee headed by Union Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has approved a Rs 1,658.17 crore recovery and reconstruction (R&R) plan for Joshimath. An official said that under the plan, the National Disaster Response Central assistance of Rs 1,079.96 will be provided from the recovery and reconstruction window of funds. Joshimath in Uttarakhand has been affected by landslides and ground subsidence and the Center has provided all necessary technical and logistical support to the state government. In January this year, land subsidence in Joshimath Many houses developed cracks due to the subsidence. According to government data, cracks appeared on 868 structures in nine wards of the city, while 181 structures fell in the unsafe zone. Situated at an altitude of 6,000 feet in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the town, located on the route to Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib, is in the high-risk zone. Falls in seismic 'Zone-V'. Joshimath also serves as a major transit point for tourists visiting both Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib.
