Former Mr India title holder and veteran Manipur bodybuilder Nongthombam Maipak, popularly known as Mr Maipak, died at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal.

Former Mr India title holder and veteran Manipur bodybuilder Nongthombam Maipak, popularly known as Mr Maipak, passed away at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal after battling illness. He was 88. Maipak, who is the inspiration behind many famous bodybuilders in the state, is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters. Maipak was born on June 12, 1935 at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Sinam Leekai in Imphal West district. Maipak was born as the second son of Late N Komol Singh and Tampakali Devi. Maipak, also known as the 'Son of Manipur', won the title of Mister India in 1970 and then on 25-26 September, 1971 in Paris ( Represented India at the Mister Universe contest held in France) and was awarded the 'Best Indian Style Mythological Pose'. ,' besides securing 10th position in the competition. Mr. Maipak was also a popular athlete in the hammer throw, shot put and discus throw events. He once represented Manipur team in the hammer throw competition during the National Games held at Delhi in 1958. The national record was broken.
