Argentina elects right-wing liberal Javier Miley as its new president

Argentina has elected right-wing liberal Javier Miley as its new president. It is preparing to cast the dice on an outsider with radical ideas to fix an economy suffering from triple-digit inflation, impending recession and rising poverty. In his first speech as president-elect, right-wing populist Javier Meili said Argentina's situation was dire and promised to make sweeping changes to Latin America's third-largest economy after assuming the presidency. Argentina's reconstruction begins today, he said. According to Argentina's electoral authority, 97.6% of the votes were cast in the presidential race yesterday, with Miley taking 55.8% and Economy Minister Sergio Massa 44.2%. Assuming the margin holds, it would be wider than all surveys had estimated and the widest since Argentina's return to democracy in 1983.
