Andhra Pradesh: GI tag for ‘Atreyapuram Pootharekulu’ The Geographical Indications Registry of Ministry of Commerce and Industry makes an entry to this effect on June 14; women of the village are involved in making the sweet for over three centuries

The ‘Atreyapuram Pootharekulu’, a sweet made of rice and jaggery, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The entry into the Geographical Indications Registry (GIR) mandates that the production of the sweet be confined only to the Atreyapuram village on the banks of the Godavari in Konaseema district of Andhra Pradesh. Putharekulu, also known as ‘paper sweet’, has been made for 300 years at Atreyapuram mandal of East Godavari district. The village of Atreyapuram has a lot of paddy cultivation.The homegrown rice becomes the core ingredient of Putharekulu. The belt of Konaseema is enriched with fertile soil, which enhances the quality of rice used in making the batter called ‘jaya biyyam.
