Awas Motala is a new edible fish species found in Mahanadi Odisha

Scientists have discovered a new species of edible freshwater fish in markets in western Odisha, India. The edible freshwater fish available in the markets of western Odisha is actually an unregistered species. The new species has been named 'Avus Mottala', said Professor Jaya Kishore Seth, principal investigator of a project initiated by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Department of Zoology, Berhampur University, Gopalpur. The fish, named 'Avus Mottala', was found during a research project funded by the Government of Odisha. This species is distinguished from other species of its genus by its bright yellow body and fleshy upper lip. The fish, locally known as 'motla', belongs to the 'avos' family and is eaten fresh or dried. More research is needed to determine its migration patterns and nutritional value.
