Renowned Assamese scholar and Padma Shri awardee Birendra Nath Dutta passes away

Obituary

Dr. Birendra Nath Dutta, an eminent personality in the field of education and folklore, breathed his last at the age of 90. He died on 23 October 2023 at 7 am at Dispur Polyclinic Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. The news of his demise has had a deep impact on the academic and cultural community of Assam. Dr. Birendra Nath Dutta is survived by his son, Dr. Uddalak Dutta, who owns a business firm in Delhi, and two daughters, Dr. Sudeshna Chaudhary and Dr. Upasana Dutta. Dr. Birendra Nath Dutta, born in 1933, did his Ph.D. Received. degree from Gauhati University in 1974. His doctoral thesis, titled 'A study of the folk culture of Goalpara district of Assam', demonstrated his passion and dedication to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Assam. Dutta was also honored with many prestigious awards. Awards received include Padma Shri Award in 2009, Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhavdev Award in 2006, Ajaan Peer Award in 2008, Leo Advertising Silpi Sanman in 2010, Manik Chandra Choudhary Memorial Award in 2011 and Sangeet Natak Akademi's Tagore Ratna Award in 2011. Due to his academic achievements, Dr. Dutta also served as the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha, a leading literary organization of Assam, from 2003 to 2005.
