KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan's president launched the island's first domestically-built submarine for testing at a port in Kaohsiung on Thursday. The submarine, if successful in its trials, would be a major breakthrough for Taiwan in shipbuilding and design. President Tsai Ing-wen said at the launch ceremony, "In the past, a domestically built submarine was considered impossible, but today a submarine designed and built by our countrymen is before you." “The construction of the submarine is a concrete realization of our resolve to defend our country. “Submarines are an important tool for the Taiwan Navy to develop asymmetric warfare power in terms of strategy and tactics,” she said.
