Kerala becomes the first state to open hallmarking centers in all districts

S Abdul Nassar, treasurer of All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association, said the opening of hallmarking centers in the districts will make Kerala a hub of gold trading and strengthen its claim of being the most reliable market in the country to buy gold jewellery. Citing figures for 2022, he said the gold business in Kerala is worth more than ?1 lakh crore with annual sales of about 250 tonnes. There are about 12,000 gold traders in the state, most of whom have BIS registration. The Bureau of Indian Standards made hallmarking mandatory to protect customers, especially those who are not aware of the market, from being cheated by jewelers. Is. Hallmarking ensures the accurate determination and official recording of the proportional content of precious metal in jewellery, artefacts or bullion and coins.
