The annual week-long celebration beginning on 24 October, the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, was first called for in the concluding document of the 1978 special session of the General Assembly on Disarmament (Resolution S-10/2). Weapons of Mass Destruction Nuclear weapons, especially nuclear weapons, remain a matter of primary concern because of their destructive power and threat to humanity. New and emerging weapons technologies, such as autonomous weapons, pose a threat to global security and have received increased attention from the international community in recent years. Disarmament measures are adopted for many reasons, including maintaining international peace and security, humanitarian objectives. These include upholding human rights principles, protecting civilians, promoting sustainable development, promoting trust and confidence among states, and preventing armed conflict.
