Padma Vibhushan awardee and 11th Chief Election Commissioner of India Manohar Singh Gill passes away

Obituary

Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Manohar Singh Gill (86) died at a hospital in south Delhi on Sunday after a brief illness. Gill served as the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs as well as the Minister of Statistics and Program Implementation in the Manmohan Singh government. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. A former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Punjab cadre, Mr Gill served as CEC between December 1996 and June 2001. He G.V.G. Served as CEC with. Mr Gill was also a recipient of the second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. He is perhaps the first former CEC to join politics as he was elected to the Rajya Sabha on a Congress ticket in 2004 and became the Union Sports Minister in 2008.
