India's Raunak Sadhwani wins World Junior Rapid Chess Championship 2023 title

Awards

One of Nagpur's brightest shining stars, 17-year-old Raunak Sadhwani, added another jewel to his bejewelled crown by emerging the U-20 World Junior Rapid Chess champion in Italy on Friday. Only last week, Raunak - Maharashtra's youngest and Nagpur's only Grandmaster (GM) - helped world no.1 Magnus Carlsen lift his maiden European title. Raunak faced various visa hurdles to reach Sardinia, Italy, for the 11-round rapid tournament organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE). But thanks to timely intervention of Maharashtra's deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and MP Meenakashi Lekhi, Raunak could represent India in the fastest chess format.
