Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez re-elected Spanish prime minister, winning majority in parliament

International

In Spain, socialist leader Pedro Sanchez has won a vote in parliament to lead the country for another term as prime minister. Mr Sanchez has won the support of 179 members of Spain's 350-member parliament and won an absolute majority in the vote. He won the majority after approving an amnesty agreement for Catalans involved in a failed attempt to secede from Spain. His Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) made separate agreements with several regional parties to gain support, including a controversial bill on amnesty for Catalan separatists, which sparked protests across Spain. The conservative People's Party was an outgrowth of the far-right Vox. All voted for Sanchez, who first ran for office in 2018.
