To protect domestic metallurgical industries from unfair foreign competition, the Ministry of Finance officially notified on July 9-10, 2026, the extension of the anti-dumping duty on specific seamless tubes, pipes, and hollow profiles of iron and alloy steel imported from China. BACKGROUND & IMPORTANCE: The duty, which was originally slated to expire, has been extended until January 2027 following a rigorous sunset review investigation by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR). The review found that removing the duty would lead to a severe influx of cheap, subsidized Chinese steel, severely damaging the operational margins of Indian manufacturers and contradicting the "Make in India" ethos.
(Exam Perspective) — The Indian government extended the anti-dumping duty on seamless steel pipes and tubes from China till 2027.
(Exam Perspective) — These investigations are conducted by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) under the Ministry of Commerce.
Anti-Dumping Duty — It is a protectionist tariff imposed on foreign imports priced below fair market value.
Main Point :-
In international trade economics, dumping occurs when a country or company exports a product at a price lower than its domestic market price.
An anti-dumping duty is a tariff imposed by a domestic government to rectify this market distortion and ensure fair competition.
Unlike safeguard duties, which are applied to all imports of a product, anti-dumping duties are country-specific and sometimes even firm-specific.
